What is IVF?

IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is a process where a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm are fertilized outside the body in a laboratory. Often referred to as “Test Tube Baby” treatment, the fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred to the woman’s uterus for implantation. The entire procedure, from beginning to end, is performed by experienced IVF specialists like Dr Sandeep Talwar, ensuring the highest level of care and expertiseWho needs IVF?

Who needs IVF?

For natural conception, healthy sperm must meet the egg in the fallopian tube, where fertilization occurs, and the embryo then implants in the uterus. However, when there are issues in this process, IVF may be required. Common reasons for needing IVF include:

Male infertility: Conditions like oligospermia (low sperm count), asthenospermia (poor sperm motility), teratospermia (abnormal sperm shape), or a combination of these known as Oligoasthenoteratospermia (OATS). Some men may also experience azoospermia, where no sperm is present.

Female infertility: Women may face issues such as blocked fallopian tubes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), anovulation (lack of ovulation), low ovarian reserve (low AMH levels), endometriosis, uterine fibroids, poor endometrial lining, or conditions like Asherman’s Syndrome (uterine adhesions).

Who performs IVF?

IVF treatments should only be conducted by certified specialists in reproductive endocrinology. Dr. Sandeep Talwar is a highly qualified IVF specialist with over 30 years of experience. She has treated countless patients with complex fertility issues and boasts a remarkable success rate in assisted reproduction. Dr. Talwar is known for her patient-centered approach and thorough knowledge of advanced IVF techniques.

Investigations before IVF

Before starting IVF, a thorough evaluation is required. In addition to routine blood tests, an ultrasound scan is performed to assess the uterus and ovaries. Dr. Sandeep Talwar checks the endometrial thickness (ET) and the antral follicle count (AFC) to evaluate ovarian reserve. Additional hormonal tests like Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) are done, and in some cases, a hysteroscopy may be recommended to ensure the uterine environment is suitable for embryo implantation.

Steps in the IVF Process

  • Initial Consultation: During the first visit, Dr. Sandeep Talwar will take a detailed medical history and review previous investigations. A personalized treatment plan will be created after a thorough transvaginal ultrasound and examination.

  • Ovarian Stimulation: Hormonal injections are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These injections can be self-administered by the patient using an easy pen-style device.

  • Ultrasound Monitoring: Dr. Talwar closely monitors the progress of ovarian stimulation through transvaginal ultrasounds every 4-5 days.

  • Egg Retrieval: Once the follicles are mature, the eggs are retrieved through a minor procedure under anesthesia. No incisions are involved, making it a minimally invasive and safe process.

  • Embryo Development: The retrieved eggs are fertilized in the lab using techniques like conventional IVF or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). The development of embryos is carefully monitored, and they may be grown to the blastocyst stage (Day 5) for better implantation potential.

  • Embryo Transfer: Once the embryos are ready, they are transferred into the uterus using a simple procedure under ultrasound guidance. If any additional embryos are left, they can be cryopreserved for future use.

IVF Cost Breakdown

  • The cost of IVF can vary depending on several factors:

    • Patient factors: Age and weight of the patient may affect the amount of medication required, impacting the overall cost.
    • Advanced techniques: Use of advanced methods like ICSI, Blastocyst culture, Embryo Freezing, and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) can increase the cost.
    • Third-party reproduction: If donor eggs or surrogacy are needed, the expenses can be significantly higher.
    •

On average, the cost of a conventional IVF cycle with Dr. Sandeep Talwar starts at around INR 1,40,000. However, it may increase depending on the complexity of the case and any additional treatments required.
